The Best Egyptian Cotton Sheets

The quality of the sheet on which you sleep can have a dramatic impact on your sleeping habits. You won’t sleep as peacefully if your sheets make you itchy, of course, but even the other extreme of too sateen of a weave on your sheets can make you sleep uncomfortably, as well. Egyptian cotton may not be a fool-proof guarantee of quality, but that is an excellent starting point to ensure you’re getting the kind of bed sheets that can give you the best sleep possible. If you’re not sure what else to look out for, let us take the pressure off!

We reviewed dozens of Egyptian cotton sheets to identify the best of the best. We looked at thread count and different weaves to create textures with different benefits. We found the durable sheet sets to keep you warm and those that will cool you off. No matter what you’re looking for in an Egyptian cotton sheet set, we’ve found the one for you.

Who Should Buy Egyptian Cotton Sheets

Because of the long weave in Egyptian cotton, it grows softer over time. It maintains it’s strength, and that makes it the best sheet for regular use. You can wash and use for years and only enjoy the experience all the more as your sheets soften, and you become more and more comfortable in your own bed.

The versatility of Egyptian cotton resides in its fibers. Using the longer fibers of this type in different weaves creates entirely different feels. You can opt for a sheet with a percale weave to create a cooling experience that makes for the perfect sheet for hot sleepers. Conversely, cold sleepers will appreciate a thicker weave like a sateen to hold your warmth in and prevent you from losing all your body heat throughout the night. If you’re looking for a durable sheet, finding a twill-weaved Egyptian cotton will let you use your sheets over and over.

Important Features to Consider

Egyptian cotton sheets should have a few important features. Here’s what to consider when selecting an Egyptian cotton bed sheet:

  • Thread count. Thread count is the number of horizontal and verticle threads a sheet has per square inch. The higher the thread count, the higher the quality – or so it used to be. When it became clear that this was an excellent marketing tool, manufacturers began inflating their numbers to pull your eye to their product. Keep in mind that your sheets need to breathe, and to do so, you will want some space between the threads.
  • Complete set. If you’re getting sheets, it only makes sense that you’ll get all the coordinating pieces. By this, we primarily mean a fitted sheet, top sheet, and pillowcases. Otherwise, you may have your body getting optimal comfort on one side, and the difference on the other side will be all the more obvious. Sheets or pillowcases that you had no problem with before will seem worse when you compare them side by side. You’ll probably save by buying them all together, too. Though a lot of sets come with a couple of pillowcases, you may also want to get extras if you sleep with more than two pillows.
  • Long-staple cotton. The longer the fibers of the cotton, the softer and silkier the feel of it in your sheets. They won’t pill or tear as easily and will become softer over time. The upland cotton is the American standard, making up over 90% of the production in the country, and is a short-fiber cotton. Egyptian cotton is an extra-long fibered cotton and is by far the most popular. There are other long-staple fibers that you may appreciate, but Egyptian cotton is the most popular by far.
  • Weave. The weave pattern and texture will create different benefits in your sheets. There are several varieties, but the most common is one of the following four.
    • Standard. Standard weaves will give you a basic cotton weave. They’re less expensive than some of the more detailed weaves and feel middle of the road – you won’t notice anything dramatic about the touch of these sheets in particular. If nothing’s listed, you can assume this is the sheet weave you’re getting.
    • Percale. A percale weave gives you a crisp feel that is lightweight and ultra-breathable. This is an excellent option if you’re a hot sleeper because it cools more quickly than other weaves. It’s a matte appearance, so if you prefer the lack of shiny, slippery sheets, this may be your best bet.
    • Sateen. Much like satin sheets, this weave will give you a soft feel and shiny appearance. It’s silky rather than crisp and offers a lustrous look rather than a muted matte. They don’t breathe well and will keep cool sleepers’ warmth inside the bed with them.
    • Twill. Twill isn’t as popular as the percale or sateen cotton weaves, but you may see some in your hunt. This weave is the most durable, and you can determine this weave by its diagonal lines. This is the heaviest weave and is perfect for wintertime, and when you need to maintain your warmth. It’s also good for guest rooms or beds that get a lot of use and see a lot of wear and tear.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are Egyptian cotton sheets, and what do they do?

Egyptian cotton sheet sets are pretty obvious in their name – they’re sheet sets made from Egyptian cotton. The complication, though, is that that means any cotton made in Egypt qualifies as Egyptian cotton. – Not just the specific type of long-staple cotton that it originally meant. This means you’ll want to check and make sure the Egyptian cotton you’re getting is still high quality. The easiest way to determine is to use the “you get what you pay for” argument. If you’re finding an Egyptian cotton sheet set for pennies, you’ve probably stumbled on a deal that’s too good to be true.

When you get a high-quality Egyptian cotton sheet that is made with long fiber cotton, you can expect your sheets to last for years and get softer over time. They’ll likely be more breathable than your standard sheets, but that can depend on the particular weave of the sheets, too. Sateen weaves will be tighter and hold in heat while percale will allow you to stay cool all night.

What is the best thread count for Egyptian cotton sheets?

Not so long ago, you were able to determine the quality of a sheet set based entirely on the thread-count – that’s not the case anymore, though. Manufacturers found the thread count an effective marketing tool and began inflating their numbers unnecessarily to give the impression of luxury. The truth is that thread count hits maximum effectiveness at a range of between 400-700. Any more than that, and you can either assume exaggerated numbers or a fabric that’s less breathable than you would ideally want in a sheet.

Which is better Egyptian cotton or Pima cotton?

Both Egyptian and Pima cotton are made with long-staple or fibers that make the cotton more durable and soft, as well. They both feel soft and stand the test of time. Side by side, you may not even be able to tell the difference in appearance or feel. Pima cotton gets its name from the Native American tribe in Arizona who grew cotton – it’s a very close cousin to Egyptian cotton in its makeup, and each is a luxury-type of cotton. You may struggle to find Pima cotton products because it is a bit rarer, but once you do find it you’ll find that it tends to be slightly less expensive than the Egyptian cotton. Pima is a domestic product, and Egyptian cotton is imported.

The truth is there is no clear-cut answer to which is better – it all comes down to your preference.

Does Egyptian cotton get softer?

If the sheets are high-quality enough, then they’ll get softer after each wash, regardless of the type of cotton from which they’re made. You can predict quality based on reviews and ratings, but an excellent starting point is looking for a pure Egyptian cotton sheet set. Higher thread counts on even lower quality sheets sets will stand up to more washings and will get softer over time, as well, but when you’re washing fabric that isn’t made with the best cotton, then you’re shortening its life. Egyptian cotton will last through the softening process and come out better for it.

To make your sheets softer even faster – try adding a cup of baking soda into the wash and popping in a cup of vinegar during the rinse cycle.
